Marine Parade
Whitstable, Kent
A complete remodel of a 1970’s detached house overlooking the sea on an elevated site in Whitstable.
The brief was to extend the house to the front and rear while reconfiguring the layout to bring more light and sense of space into the house. By opening up and using the existing fabric of the house, we were able to make more of it’s positive aspects such as the sea view and south facing garden.
The house is much about contrasts; the public exterior is about privacy at ground level, dark render and cladding with set back bedrooms and vertical timber fins, while the first floor opens up to the view with large expanses of glazing and balconies. Where the exterior is mainly charcoal with glass, the interior is full of bold colour and light. The house offers the opportunity to enjoy bright open spaces, while still allowing for more reclusive quiet moments in rooms like the family snug and an internal sitting area, off the main day space.
